How Much Are You Paying For Your Home Studio?
The answer may be a lot more than you thought.
Today, working in your own studio is a dream that is easily realized. Flexible hours, low costs, no commuting, time for family, and creative business ideas all come together in the home-studio dream.
In a business of ideas, new thoughts and concepts are the goldmines of success. We have all heard stories of songwriters recalling mega-smash classic songs that started on a napkin or began as a riff on a portable recorder. Life-changing inspiration can strike like lightning.
You might think good luck made songs into hits. Good luck is most often the point where preparation meets opportunity. How are you preparing yourself?
Our business is a continuously variable mix of consulting, designing, building, remodeling and selling products for critical listening environments. We cater to clients’ needs within their budget. Often we are surprised at the Spartan conditions we encounter in a project studio. Here are some common excuses.
• “I made smash hits here.”
• “I want to use the money on a microphone or magic box.”
• “I don’t mix here.”
• “I am used to it.”
• “I check everything in my car, or at another studio.”
• “My mastering engineer is a genius.”
And on and on.
Common replies when asked, “How do you work in your studio?”
• “I spend hours on little things.”
• “I listen on two types of monitors and in different rooms I know.”
• “It’s hard, but it works.”
• “I’m not paying for time so we are able to focus in more.”
• “I make cassettes or CD’s and listen all over.”
• “I’ll make a few different variations, one with vocal up, one with drums up, one with a little more bass.”
And on and on.
Now I get to make my point, so please read carefully: If you’re not doing any of those things, what would you be doing? Precious mental ability is lost doing, rather than creating. To have more and better ideas is the best way to the bank. The best way to achieve this is to have a more comfortable, accurate studio.
Whatever your budget, the more you improve the comfort and accuracy of your studio, the less your studio will cost, simply because you will make more money … maybe lots more money.
